Top ten tips for managing your asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that can develop at any age. Each year, about 500 adults and 20 children die of asthma in Canada, yet most deaths are preventable with appropriate and timely treatment. Emergency room statistics show that September is the worst month for asthma sufferers.

  1. Become educated about your condition.

  2. Have your doctor work out a treatment plan.

  3. Talk to your doctor about a written Asthma Action Plan.

  4. Use a peak flow meter to monitor your asthma at home or track your symptoms.

  5. Recognize what triggers your asthma and avoid the triggers.

  6. Take steps to control your environment if triggers like house dust make you wheeze.

  7. Recognize the signs of worsening asthma and respond quickly.

  8. Always carry your “reliever” medication with you in case you get an unexpected attack.

  9. Learn how to exercise without causing asthma symptoms.

  10. Ask your doctor about getting an annual flu shot.
