HEART + LUNG
As home to the provincial Heart Centre and the Pacific Lung Health Centre, St. Paul’s provides complete care for British Columbians with all kinds of heart disease. Thanks to the concentration of professionals – and their participation in world-leading research and medical training – St. Paul’s has achieved many “firsts” in the treatment of cardiopulmonary disease and offers many services available nowhere else in the province.
Transcatheter aortic-valve implantation (TAVI)St. Paul’s interventional cardiologist Dr. John Webb and his colleagues are internationally recognized as a pioneer of procedures to treat life-threatening cardiovascular diseases like faulty heart valves without invasive surgery. Instead, they correct serious heart problems by threading a thin tube up to the heart through an artery in the leg. This is the only option for heart patients who are too ill for open-heart surgery. Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) ProgramCanada’s busiest and largest program of its kind provides life-saving ventricular assist devices (VADs), also known as mechanical hearts, for patients awaiting heart transplants or patients with weak hearts who need a “break” to recover. St. Paul’s Respiratory DivisionSt. Paul’s sees more patients with respiratory illnesses than any other B.C. hospital. The hospital is home to the provincial adult cystic fibrosis program and is one of the world’s leaders in research on the deadly lung disease chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). |
