HIV & AIDS

Imagine a world where everyone with HIV receives treatment.

This is what drives Dr. Julio Montaner and his team at the B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS at St. Paul’s Hospital.

Fifteen years ago, the Centre, along with partners around the world, developed today’s gold standard for HIV medication: highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART).

HAART is also at the heart of a new strategy developed by Dr. Montaner and his team: Seek and Treat for Optimal Prevention of HIV/AIDS (STOP HIV/AIDS). The Centre’s groundbreaking research has discovered that treating HIV with HAART not only improves the health of people with HIV, but also prevents people from passing the disease on to others.

The World Health Organization (WHO) agrees. If we put the STOP HIV/AIDS strategy into action globally, the WHO predicts we would stop 95% of all new HIV cases within 10 years. This made-in-B.C. strategy would also save more than 7 million lives by 2050.

Imagine.

Together, we can STOP HIV/AIDS.
